Old Alberto Contreras Concho Belt Buckle. This Large Sterling Silver Concho Belt was made by the famous artist Alberto Contreras using his interpetation of a Navajo "Concha" theme. In Spanish, Concha is translated as "Shell" and this apears to be his literal interpretation. And, it his design is also literally eccentric or off-center. I have traded hundreds of Concho Belts and many dozens of Alberto's pieces, and I've never seen anyting quite like this one. It is pretty special and it is also full of character with a funky belt and super heavy tarnished patina. I will be showing this to Alberto's son Mark and ask him if he can tell me about its history. It may have been made before he was born... It is stamp signed with the hallmark depicting the maker "AC". It is guaranteed to be Sterling Silver and authentic. Had six children, all of them boys.
All six boys became jewelers as they began to help their father at an early age. Michael Contreras has a shop here in Tucson. He has a black and white picture of himself and several of his five siblings working in Alberto's shop as children. The Sterling is in Good condition. If you like your Concho Belts Old and full of personality, then e.Notice how these Conchos are Very Large! This is well designed too..
Invited Alberto into his Thunderbird Shop here in Tucson. He worked elbow to elbow with lots of the legendary smiths that have become famous in the history of Native and American jewelry making. Carlos Diaz and Frank Patania Jr. Are two of those alumnae that remained here in Tucson. In 1949 Alberto opened his own shop here in Tucson at 146 West Drachman.
It is a real honor to be involved with such magical jewelry that came from of the shops of Contreras, Diaz, and Patania here in Tucson, Arizona. I thank You and look forward to sharing a good experience! "AMERICAN INDIAN JEWELRY I" - Gregory Schaaf. "AMERICAN INDIAN JEWELRY II: A-L".
